How to Decorate with Kilims

Kilims represent a fantastic opportunity for interior decoration. The primary movers for all interior decorating is the notion of either harmony or contrast. You choose pieces in a room that either complement the pieces around them, or contrast in interesting ways to add a touch of flair and flavor to the overall ambience of the room. Kilims make for a perfect item with any style of room.

First of all, kilims go perfectly with any decorating style. Whether it be Scandinavian, Oriental, Classic, Modern, Rustic, or any other style that may be just your own! This is because the designs themselves can range from classic gemoetric shapes in staid colors, to bright designs with loud imagery of animals, plants, and motifs that shout out to guests to be stared at.

Another important feature of kilims when it comes to interior design is their multi-functionality. Kilims are mostly used as floor pieces, but as they’re thin, light, and can be colored in a variety of ways. They can be hung on the wall, spread over furniture, used as tablecloths, bedspreads, or cushion covers. Or really anything you set your mind to, they are pretty pieces that are meant to be seen and can used in many different manners.

When it comes to color, kilims are great for both the harmony and the contrast sides of things. They match well with so many standard colors. For instance, it’s quite easy to match the subsidiary colors of a kilim to the secondary colors of the room. Using the dominant color of kilims also proves easy to match with secondary colors of the room to produce beautiful effects, as the kilim will complement whichever color of the room you particularly enjoy and wish to highlight.

Kilims are also great to use for those who like to splash a little contrast around their surroundings. Kilims can be quite bright at times, and reflect light in the way they’re woven. This can lead to a kilim being a perfect counterpoint to a room, particularly when the dominant color is softer and thus contrasting beautifully with the bright colors of the kilim’s deep, rich shades. Sometimes this contrast can be all the more playful, by introducing those deep colors that make kilims so lovely with a color you already have in the room you’re thinking of, only with perhaps softer preexisting colors.

The final thing to remember when decorating with kilims is that they can add a bit of culture to your room. While most kilims don’t scream out their “Eastern” influences, they ultimately do date back 9,000 years to the foundations of modern civilization, and regardless of how they’re placed they will inevitably add a touch of this culture to the surroundings. This makes them ideal again for both complementary, formal settings or for more eclectic designs.
